Hello, and welcome to the latest installment of Anime of The Week #66! Do you like slice of life? Do you like comedy? Do you like running gags? Then this anime is for you! The anime is Yuru Yuri.

Aired:

Jul 5, 2011 to Sep 20, 2011 (Summer 2011)

Synopsis:

After a year in grade school without her childhood friends, first year student Akari Akaza is finally reunited with second years Yui Funami and Kyouko Toshinou at their all-girls’ middle school. During the duo’s first year, Yui and Kyouko formed the “Amusement Club” which occupies the now nonexistent Tea Club’s room. Shortly after Akari joins, one of her fellow classmates, Chinatsu Yoshikawa, pays the trio a visit under the impression that they are the Tea Club; it is only once the three girls explain that the Tea Club has been disbanded that they can convince Chinatsu to join the Amusement Club—a group with no purpose other than to provide entertainment for its members.

Based on the slice-of-life manga by Namori, Yuru Yuri is an eccentric comedy about a group of girls who spend their spare time drinking tea and fawning over each other, all while completely failing to even notice the supposed main character Akari amongst them.

My Thoughts:

When watching Yuru Yuri, I can safely say that I had a wonderful time watching this show. The plot is easy to understand, and the characters are very likeable. Each one stands out whether it’s the running joke of Akari becoming less and less noticeable in the beginning of every episode, or Ikeda fantasizing about pairing two girls together, resulting in a nosebleed. The score is nice as well, conveying the atmosphere of a relaxed life the girls have when inside the club. The animations is also alright, doing what it needs to do to get the job done. Some of my favorite characters would have to be the aforementioned Ikeda, Kyouko, and Chinatsu, as they definitely have their own personalities and running gags. The comedy is also fun to watch, whether it’s Chinatsu’s art being so terrifying that it has to be censored, or the aforementioned Ikeda’s yuri fantasies. The side characters are also pretty entertaining, such as a pair of girls where one has a case of breast envy. Overall, Yuru Yuri is a pleasing and comedic anime to watch if you have the spare time. Whether you want to watch it all at once or in small bits is up to you. I believe either or won’t ruin the overall experience withthe show.
